Rewards for Walking: How to Actually Get Rewarded for Every Step

There are three real ways to be rewarded for walking in the UK. Cash-back apps, the coming NHS scheme, and habit and game apps. Most 'get paid to walk' pages hide the truth about what they pay. This one tells you what each is really worth.

Can you really get paid to walk?

A little, yes. Cash-back apps do pay you to walk, but the amount is tiny. Think a few pounds a year, not a second income.

That's the honest starting point. Most "get paid to walk" pages online won't tell you this. They push you to download an app and skip the part where you learn what it actually pays.

There are three real ways to get rewarded for walking in the UK:

  • Cash-back and points apps. Apps like Sweatcoin and WeWard turn your steps into a small in-app currency you can cash out or spend. Real money, very small amounts.
  • The NHS Movement 26.2 scheme. A government-backed plan to reward walking with points and shopping vouchers. It isn't live yet.
  • Habit and game apps. Apps like Motion that reward the walk itself, not with cash, but with progress you keep and a goal built around you.

The rest of this page covers each one, and what it's honestly worth.

What are the three ways to get rewarded for walking?

Here are the three routes side by side. Cash-back apps pay small amounts of real cash. The NHS scheme will pay vouchers, but it isn't live. Habit apps reward the walk itself.

Way to get rewardedWhat you getRealistically worthBest for
Cash-back / points apps (e.g. Sweatcoin, WeWard)In-app coins or points you cash out or spend on vouchersA few pounds a year at most[1]People who want a tiny bonus for steps they'd take anyway

Habit / game apps (e.g. Motion)A personalised daily goal and an evolveable Motmot you build and keepNo cash. The reward is an easier walking habitPeople who want walking to stick, not a few pennies

Every honest answer starts with the numbers, so the next section breaks down what each cash-back app really pays.

How much can you really earn walking?

Very little. Most walkers earn a few pounds a year from cash-back walking apps, and often less than that. Here is what each of the three big names really pays.

Sweatcoin

Sweatcoin gives you about 1 coin for every 1,000 outdoor steps, capped at roughly 10 coins a day on the free tier.[1] Those coins only turn into real cash through the SWEAT token, which trades for a fraction of a penny. Walking 10,000 steps a day for a whole year works out at somewhere around £3 to £30 in cash.[1] Only outdoor, GPS-tracked steps count, so treadmill and most indoor steps earn little or nothing.

WeWard

WeWard pays "Wards" for your steps. A solid 10,000-step day earns about 8 to 10 Wards, worth only a few pence, and you can earn at most 25 Wards a day.[2] You also have to open the app and tap to convert before midnight, or that day earns nothing.[2] Rewards cost thousands of Wards, so from steps alone it takes months of daily walking to reach even a small payout. You cash out to PayPal, bank transfer, or gift cards.

StepBet (it works differently)

StepBet isn't really "getting paid to walk". You stake your own money, usually around $40, on hitting a personalised step goal.[3] Hit the goal and you get your stake back plus a share of the money left behind by people who dropped out, usually only a few dollars of profit and rarely more than about $10.[4] Miss it and you lose your stake. It's a bet on yourself, not free income.

The pattern is the same across all of them. You can earn a little, but nobody is getting rich, or even earning a coffee a week, from walking alone. If a page promises otherwise, be careful.

Is there an NHS scheme that rewards walking?

The NHS is building its own rewards scheme called Movement 26.2. It will reward walking and other movement with points that convert into shopping vouchers. It isn't live yet.

The scheme is due to start around January 2027, and the reward partners and voucher values haven't been confirmed. So there's nothing to earn from it today. It's worth knowing about because it will be free, official, and open to people across the country.

We cover it in detail on two pages:

Motion isn't part of the NHS scheme. We just think it's the most interesting reward-for-walking news in the UK right now.

The reward that actually lasts

The reward that lasts isn't cash. It's the walking habit itself. Cash rewards are tiny, and they tend to fade the moment they stop.

There's good evidence for this. Reward-driven step gains often fall away once the reward ends. Our evidence review, does Movement 26.2 work?, looks at the research on whether paying people to move keeps them moving. The short version is simple. A reward can start a habit, but it rarely sustains one on its own.

Motion is built around that idea. It doesn't pay you cash. It rewards the walk itself, so the movement becomes its own payoff.

  • A personalised daily goal. Your target is set from your real activity, not a flat 10,000. It grows with you, so it stays doable but never pointless.
  • An evolveable Motmot. Your Motmot is a virtual pet you build up as you move. The progress you make is progress you keep. There are no streaks to lose and no punishment for an off day.
  • Free to play. No coins, no crypto, no cash staked.

To be clear, Motion does not pay you money to walk. It makes the walking feel worth doing on its own, which is the thing that actually keeps people going.

Among Motion members, that approach adds up. Members have logged over 4 million activities and completed nearly half a million goals. Download Motion free and see how it feels to be rewarded for the walk itself.

Rewards for walking: frequently asked questions

If you have anything else you want to ask, reach out to us.

    • Can you get paid real money to walk?

Yes, a little. Cash-back apps like Sweatcoin and WeWard pay real cash for your steps, but the amount is very small. A regular walker earns only a few pounds a year from Sweatcoin,[1] and only a few pence for a 10,000-step day from WeWard.[2] They're free and legitimate, but treat any money as a tiny bonus, not income.

    • Does the NHS pay you to walk?

Not yet. The NHS is building a scheme called Movement 26.2 that will reward walking and other movement with points you can turn into shopping vouchers. It isn't live. It's due to start around January 2027, and the voucher partners and values haven't been confirmed, so there's nothing to earn from it today.

    • Which walking app pays the most?

No walking app pays much for steps alone. Among the cash-back apps, WeWard pays only a few pence for a 10,000-step day,[2] and Sweatcoin's cash value works out at roughly £3 to £30 a year.[1] StepBet can pay a little more, usually only a few dollars of profit per game,[4] but only because you stake your own money first, so it's a bet, not free earnings.

    • Is Sweatcoin or WeWard worth it?

Only as a tiny bonus, not as income. Both are free and legitimate, but the payouts are small: Sweatcoin is worth roughly £3 to £30 a year for a 10,000-step-a-day walker,[1] and WeWard pays only a few pence for the same day, with a daily tap-to-convert step you can't miss.[2] They're worth it if you'd walk anyway and don't mind the friction. See our Sweatcoin and WeWard comparisons for the full picture.

    • What is the best rewards-for-walking app?

It depends on what you want. For a small cash bonus, a cash-back app like Sweatcoin or WeWard is the closest fit, though the payouts are tiny. For an official voucher scheme, it's worth waiting for the NHS's Movement 26.2. For a reward that lasts, meaning an easier walking habit rather than a few pennies, a habit app like Motion works best. Motion doesn't pay cash. It rewards the walk itself with a personalised goal and an evolveable Motmot you keep.
