Fitbit, Google Health and Motion: what is changing

Short version: connect Google Health to Apple Health or Health Connect, and your Fitbit data keeps reaching Motion. It takes about two minutes and the steps are below.

The longer version is worth reading if you want to know why, and what we are doing about it.

What is changing

When Fitbit became Google Health in May 2026, the old way that apps like ours talked to Fitbit was put on notice. Google is retiring the original Fitbit developer connection at the end of September 2026. It is a hard cut-off rather than a gradual wind-down, and registrations for the old system closed some time ago.

Its replacement is a new Google Health connection. Getting access to it is not a matter of flipping a switch. It requires a formal review and approval process, and every single user has to re-approve the connection from scratch, because the old permissions do not carry across.

Where Motion stands, honestly

We do not have direct Google Health access yet. We are in the approval process and pushing on it, but we did not get through before the end-of-September deadline.

We would rather tell you that plainly than let you find out from a step count that stops moving. It has been a heavy lift for a team of our size, and it is taking longer than we wanted. We will update this page the moment that changes.

In the meantime, there is a route that works today, is fully supported by Google, and does not depend on us at all.

The fix: let Google Health pass the data on

Motion reads from Apple Health on iPhone and Health Connect on Android. Google Health can write to both. So instead of Motion asking Fitbit for your data, Google Health hands it to your phone‘s health hub, and Motion picks it up from there.

Pick the one that matches your phone.

On iPhone: Google Health to Apple Health

Since August 2026 Google Health can write your Fitbit data into Apple Health, which it never used to be able to do. In Google Health, tap Connections, then Apps and services, then Apple Health, and follow the prompts. Make sure you allow Steps.

On Android: Google Health to Health Connect

Health Connect is Android‘s health hub, built in from Android 14. In Google Health, tap Connections, then Partner apps, then Sync your favorite health apps, and work through the setup. Again, make sure Steps is selected.

Then check Motion

Open Motion and make sure it has permission to read steps from Apple Health or Health Connect. If you set Motion up a while ago, this is probably already granted and there is nothing to do.

Our full step-by-step guide has every tap for both platforms, and the Health Connect guide covers installing it on older Android versions.

If your steps stop updating

  • Open Google Health first. Your tracker syncs to that app over Bluetooth, and nothing downstream can pass on data the phone has not received yet. Pull down on the Today tab, or use Sync Now under Connections.
  • Check the permission for Steps specifically. On iPhone: Apple Health, then Sharing, then Apps, then Google Health. On Android: open Health Connect and check what Google Health is allowed to write and what Motion is allowed to read.
  • Watch for duplicates. If your phone and your Fitbit both write steps, Apple Health can double-count. Set which source wins under the Steps data type, then Data Sources and Access.

What happens next

We are still working towards direct Google Health support, and we will keep at it. When it lands you will not have to undo anything you set up here. The Apple Health and Health Connect route will carry on working exactly as it does now, and a direct connection would simply be one less hop.

If you are stuck at any point, use the "Chat with us" option in the app and we will help you through it.
